Redistricting in NJ and elsewhere

Back to Table of contents

The process of creating electoral districts after a census is little appreciated as a major factor in determining the fairness of our elections, both for parties (Democratic, Republican) and also for racial/ethnic groups. NJ has a fairly interesting process, with both strengths and weaknesses. California has an even more unique citizens' process. Here are some links to both:
  • NJ apportionment Commission website for NJ legislative districts. Note that this process is complete for this decade.
  • NJ Redistricting Commission website for NJ congressional districts. This process is also complete for this redistricting cycle.
  • Discussion of NJ 2010 redistricting (NJ Spotlight)
  • Brickner Report -- Eagleton's analysis of current redistricting in NJ.

  • Suggestions to improve the process in NJ -- Brennan Center (Myrna Perez testimony 2010).
