Black Lives Matter

The League of Women Voters of Camden County is adding to the chorus of voices speaking out against racism and police violence in the weeks since the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Our mission of empowering voters and defending democracy is meaningless if we do not speak out against racism in all forms, and stand firmly in the fight against systemic racism that creates and perpetuates inequality in America. We will listen to and amplify Black voices and center the conversation on race around those who have experienced racism most acutely.

On a local level, our chapter recognizes its short-comings in actively addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We promise to address these issues more actively going forward, and invite all chapter members and interested non-members to attend our membership meeting and strategic planning session on August 26 where we will discuss these efforts in greater detail. In the meantime, all League members are asked to call out racism when they see it. If you are not sure how to take action, please reach out and we will guide you.

We echo the sentiments of our state League: "The League of Women Voters is committed to combating voter suppression and fighting for an inclusive and participatory democracy, but without racial and economic justice our democracy will continue to fail too many. Black Lives Matter."

You will find many great resources if you search for "anti-racism reading lists", and here is just one compilation.
